Individual Note: A Mr D.Stokes engineer arrived at Fremantle WA from Calcutta aboard the GRACCHUS on the 30 May 1923.
He made his way to Carnarvon and worked as a truck driver for Charles Kingsford Smith. Whilst at Carnarvon he met and married Whilemina Young and in partnership with her son (Patrick Laidler) opperated a mail run to the North West Cape up until WW2.
Then in partnership with his wife (Wilhemina Young) purchased 28 acres of crown land and started the Retreat Plantation on the North bank of the Gascoyne River.
In his younger days Desmond Stokes claimed he was a bounty hunter shooting tigers for the Burmese Government and an engineer on a cargo vessel sailing the waters of the Persian Gulf.
