Individual Note: No baptism or birth information has been found to date for Robert Leadley hence the birth date given is just an approximation.
Robert was a witness at the marriage of his sister in law Sarah Pescod; Feb 24 1789; William Arlen*, bachelor, mariner & Sarah Pescod*, spinster, both of Whitby, banns, Wit Robert Laidler, John Jessop, Cur John Atkinson
Robert was a witness at the marriage of John Prescot (Pescod?): Dec 6 1798 John Prescot*, bachelor, mariner & Mary Jackson, spinster, both of Whitby, licence; Wit Jane Jackson, Robert Laidler; Cur John Atkinson.
Surname appears to be LADELER. Variations of the name appear in different records; ie Ladeler, Leadler, Leadley, Laidler.
Robert Laidler was a mate aboard the 'Ocean' in 1787. Ref: Whitby Musters
From Stephen Baines (holtmariner) in the Whitby Group: Received 18th Aug 2007:
'Ocean' was a 226-ton brig built at Whitby in 1764. The owners in 1787 were Jacob Blackburn and Robert Clark. This is presumably the same Jacob Blackburn who was master of the vessel when it set out from London on 26 March. 'Ocean' sailed to Memel, and was at Bristol on 18th Sept. On 8 November she was at Milford (presumably Milford Haven in Wales?) where there was some kind of disaster: Jacob Blackburn and three other members of the crew were drowned. Zebulon Mennel, who was the mate, takes over as captain, and it is at this point that Robert Laidler joins the ship as Mate on the 9th. Once the vessel is back in London of 30 Nov he is discharged along with the rest of the crew. Mrs Blackburn is given as the owner on the muster roll.
I have a note that a Robert Leadley was a line manager on the 'Volunteer', but I have no date for this. I shall have to check it out: presumably the muster roll was damaged and the date was lost. 'Volunteer' was a whaler.
'Middleton' was a 353-ton ship built at Whitby in 1789, by Thomas Fishburn. The owners were Peter Middleton, Israel Hunter and Jos Barker, though in 1814 it was owned by Chilton. She was lost in the Gulf of St Lawrence in 1828 (this from Weatherill).
My selection of Muster rolls also lists a Thomas Ladder, and a William Ladler/Ladley who sailed on the 'Elizabeth' in 1766 and the Earl of Pembroke in 1767. The 'Earl of Pembroke' was sold to the Admiralty who re-named it 'Endeavour' and it was Captain Cook's vessel.
