At the time he was employed as a clerk at the Vic Bks. His mother Elizabeth Whitfield was named as his next of kin and provided written consent for Francis to enlist. At the time she was living at Welsford Street in Shepparton. Physical description on enlistment: Height 5' 11 1/4", Weight 11 stone 7 lbs, Chest 35-38 inches, Compexion fair, Eyes blue, Hair light brown, Religion Salvation Army (but on another document he is listed as Baptist religion). He left Australia on 6th July 1915 aboard 'Demosthenes' and was at Anzac in October 1915, then in France in 1916 where he was wounded in action 21st July 1916 - he suffered a gunshot wound to the hand. He was wounded in action again in September 1917 and it was 3 months before he rejoined his company in December 1917. On 19th May 1918 after further injuries were sustained he was invalided and returned to Portsmouth, UK - he suffered a fractured arm and wounds to his feet. He returned to Australia via the 'Nestor' 12th December 1918. On 15th January 1919 his mother Elizabeth wrote to Base Command enquiring about her son's likely arrival date. At the time her address was 311 Wyndham Street in Shepparton. The reply indicated that the initial letter was sent to Elizabeth at Welsford Street and confirmed that Francis would arrive in Melbourne about 23rd January 1919. On 29th September 1929 Francis applied for the war medals due to him and not previous received. His address at this time was Stanley Avenue, Oakley.
